06/01/2010

This is the public's opportunity to address the task force which is studying the Somerville Public Library joining the Somerset County Library System. The meeting will be held in the main reading room of the library on Tuesday, June 1 from 6:00-7:00PM.

In his State of the Borough address given on January 1, Mayor Brian Gallagher stated that he would set up a Library Review Committee comprised of Library Board members, council members, borough employees, and concerned citizens to evaluate the idea of joining the Somerset County Library System.
The Committee (“Task Force”) was appointed in February and met for the first time on March 9 in the Mayor’s Office.
The mayor emphasized that the Task Force and its findings would be an “open and transparent process.”
The Task Force has been charged with evaluating what resources and services that the Somerville Public Library has, including, but not limited to materials, programs and technology, and comparing those resources that to what would be offered if Somerville joined the Somerset County Library System.  The committee is looking at the Library’s budget, staffing, salaries, as well as the history of the Library and its impact upon the Borough community.

On March 16, the Task Force and several members of the community toured the Somerville Public Library and received background and budgetary information on the Somerville Public Library.  Additional meetings, which are open to the public, are planned.  In addition, the Task Force expects to be touring some of the Somerset County Library’s facilities and speaking to staff at different branches of the Somerset County Library System. The committee will also review the process that Bound Brook’s Library underwent when it joined the Somerset County Library System.

The Chairperson of the Task Force is Deirdre Rosinski, a member of the Borough’s Planning Board.   Michael Kerwin, President of the Somerset County Business Partnership, is Vice-chairperson of the Task Force.

Other members of the committee are James Loewen, President of the Board of Trustees of Somerville Public Library; Herb Hall, Treasurer, of the Board of Trustees of Somerville Public Library; David Hardgrove, a member of the Board of Trustees of Somerville Public Library and a professional librarian; Jane Williams, educator; Vicki Harmer, a member of the Somerville Education Foundation, Jadusingh Martin, a member of the Friends of Somerville Public Library; Kevin Sluka , Somerville Borough Business Administrator, Janet Kelk, Finance Officer for the Borough of Somerville; Melissa Banks, Somerville Public Library Director; and Councilman Ken Utter, who is the liaison to the Borough Council.
